John Chavez - Brief Biography

Student of the MonthJohn Chavez is a full-time student who is majoring in Automotive Technology and Teacher Education at St. Philip’s College. He has earned a GPA of 4.0 throughout his time at the college. On three separate occasions, John has been on the President’s Honors List. John plans to transfer to the University of Texas at San Antonio to earn his Bachelor degree in Teacher Education. While attending SPC, John earned two scholarships from the Automotive Program: a $500 FireStone/Bridgestone scholarship and a $700 Gunn Automotive Scholarship for the purchase of tools. In addition, he received a new tool box for successfully completing his course work this past spring semester.

John’s academic achievements are a reflection of his leadership abilities. He is currently serving as the Vice President of Leadership in the Psi Kappa Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at SPC. He believes in the mission of the organization and shares a common commitment to learning. He clearly has a proven record of academic success.

John is a remarkable individual. He and his wife, Barbara, endured a heavy loss last year. Their most valuable belongings were lost in a house fire and they were displaced as a result. John and his wife slept in an air mattress in a vacant apartment for a few days. Both wondered how they would survive. Although the future seemed unclear, John continued to study, continued to push forward, and through all this, he earned an A in his two courses.

In closing, John has a warm and caring demeanor. His personal strengths and dedication distinguish him from the rest. It is not common to find students who are embedded with characteristics of a true professional.
