DESCRIPTION OF
General Statement of Duties: Performs work of unusual difficulty in planning, managing, and directing the operation of the areas of Arts and Sciences, Occupation/Technical Education, Learning Resources, Extended Services, and Program Development.
Supervision received: Administrative Direction
Supervision exercised: Upper level manager
RESPONSIBLE TO: President of the College
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES*
Interprets academic standards and policies of the college to students, faculty, administrators, and the general public.
Serves as chief academic officer at the college level in the absence of the President of the College.
Develops class schedules each semester, including rendering decisions on retention/deletion of classes and student class loads.
Provides classroom assignments and facility use inventorying for maximum space utilization.
Participates in development of academic division personnel policies and procedures for District and/or college through monitoring of, and recommendations on, promotion guidelines and faculty substitute pay policy.
Interviews and evaluates credentials of prospective faculty; recommends salary scale placement of new faculty.
Monitors professional development activities for faculty.
Supervises divisions of Arts and Sciences, Occupational/Technical Education, Extended Services, Program Development, Learning Resources, and faculty development.
Assist in the formulation of District policies on student admission, re-admission, denial of admission, late registration, grade changes, and other appeals of college policies.
Coordinates operation of the Office of Vice President of Academic Affairs with other administrative offices.
Supervises preparation of academic calendar and college catalog.
May serve on numerous committees within the College District.
May represent college to American Association for Higher Education (AAHE), Texas Junior College Athletic Association, and other agencies.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of college administration and operations of a multi-college district.
Knowledge and understanding of federal and state legislation on employment practices.
Good knowledge and understanding of principles and practices of budgeting in academic (college/ university) environment.
Knowledge and application of new and emerging instructional delivery methods and technology; a commitment to and understanding of data-based decision making.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, faculty, and the public.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to organize and direct major work operations and work under pressure of deadlines.
EDUCATION:
Master’s degree. Doctorate strongly preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
Requires: Three years of higher education teaching experience and three years experience in academic administration (Dean or higher preferred).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
No extraordinary physical requirements.
