OPERATING TITLE:  DEAN OF EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT SERVICES

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

 

General Statement of Duties:  Establishes Educational Support Services departmental objectives, policies, and procedures; supervises staff; directs, develops, and evaluates current and new educational support service programs; and prepares and assures conformance with the departmental budget.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES*

 

Supervises and evaluates Educational Support Services staff (Counseling, Foreign Students, Job Placement, Special Populations, Assessment, Orientation, Tutoring and Technology Center, and Student Center).

 

a.            Assures quality departmental staffing certifying qualifications are in accordance with or exceed District requirements.

 

b.            Provides staff with direction, training, coordination, and staff consultation.

 

c.            Coordinates professional and staff development activities and evaluates employee performance.

 

d.            Conducts regular departmental meetings.

 

e.            Answers questions and resolves problems as required.

 

Directs, develops, coordinates, and evaluates educational support service programs designed to develop basic college level academic skills in under-prepared students.

 

a.       Directs, coordinates, expands, and improves current programs.

 

b.      Coordinates with the Office of Institutional Research in studies to determine educational support service program needs analysis, trends, and forecasts.

 

c.       Develops grant proposals for current and future programs.

 

d.      Evaluates educational support service programs in order to monitor performance against objectives and takes remedial action when required.

 

Establishes, subject to administrative review, short- and long-term goals, aims, and objectives for the educational support services discipline as well as the departmental policies, systems, and procedures required to successfully implement those stated objectives.

 

Maintains liaison with financial aid, admissions, and instruction in the delivery of support services.

 

Prepares, recommends, and assures conformance with the educational support services budget.  Oversees the proper and appropriate usage of funds, equipment, and supplies, etc.  Develops appropriate documentation and budgets for the use of Perkins funds.  Maintains appropriate records and services to assure program compliance.

 

Performs special projects and assignments as required by the Vice President of Student Success.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT:

 

            Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

Comprehensive knowledge, demonstrated through direct experience, of education support services operations and educational principles, practices and procedures. 

 

Knowledge of a broad range of related disciplines including student development theories, academic advisement, counseling and assessment, academic learning assistance and tutoring programs to college level and special needs students, etc. 

Knowledge of State and Federal requirements pertaining to education support service operations.

 

Demonstrated skills in the principles and practices of supervision, management, budgeting, and problem solving.

 

Interpersonal, organizational, coordinative, and communication skills with the ability to plan and manage a major college department.  Must be innovative, creative, and resourceful.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

 

Master’s degree in counseling, educational psychology, adult/community education or a related field with three (3) years of directly related administrative or supervisory experience.  Experience in the delivery of support services.  Experience in a bilingual/multicultural community college is preferred.
