TITLE:  DEAN OF STUDENT SUCCESS

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

General Statement of Duties:  Serves as the leader and supervisor for the Student Success and Support Services that include Admissions, Advisement, Assessment, Student Records, Special Services for Students with Disabilities, Transfer and Career information, Job Placement, Student Leadership and Activities, College Orientation, and Service Learning.  Provides student leadership in a liaison relationship with the Bursar and with Financial Aid.  As a member of the President’s leadership team, participates in strategic and organizational planning processes.  Responsible with the Vice President for linking all aspects of Student Success to the instructional areas of the college.

Supervision received:  Administrative direction

Supervision exercised:  Upper level manager

REPORTS TO:  President of the College

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES*

Designs, implements, supervises, and evaluates all aspects of the Student Success area in compliance with federal, state, and Southern Association of Colleges & Schools (SACS) regulations.  These areas include Enrollment Services, Marketing and Outreach, Assessment, Advising, Counseling, Services for Special Populations, Student Leadership, Student Activities, College Orientation, Transfer Assistance, Job Placement, Career Services, Service Learning, and Records and Reports.

Leads the planning, budget development, budget management, and personnel evaluation for the Student Success unit.

Coordinates activities of Bursar and Financial Aid offices (district-managed college services), and works with designated personnel to deliver and evaluate services to students.

Supports the college in planning and scheduling of classes and the college catalog.

Coordinates all aspects of the college registration process for on-campus and off-campus classes, continuously evaluating and improving processes.

Leads the development of information systems that provide relevant information to students and community (i.e., articulation and transfer information, career information, admission requirements, etc.).

Hires, trains, develops, supervises, and evaluates all Student Success staff.

Engages in creative problem solving to balance serving the needs of students with meeting the legal and ethical obligations of the institution.

Creates a culture of service to students, faculty, staff, prospective students, industry representatives, and community members.

Empowers employees and creates an atmosphere that is open to creative ideas for action and improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

A broad knowledge of student service functions.

In-depth knowledge of Admissions and Records procedures/policies/mandates.

General understanding of financial aid activities, assessment requirements, TASP, and class placement matters.

Demonstrated success working as a team member, in consensus building, and in integrated work groups.

Effective managerial skills pertaining to personnel, budgets, and projects.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Excellent interpersonal skills to include the ability to understand and cause understanding, motivate, develop, and persuade others.

Ability to develop, implement, supervise, and evaluate a broad range of student services within a student-centered environment.

Ability to commit to a “one-stop” student service atmosphere.
 
 

Must have initiative, innovation, self-motivation, and the ability to focus on quality and continuous improvement.

Familiarity with or ability to  master a computerized student information system.

EDUCATION

 Master’s degree in a job-related area is required.

EXPERIENCE

Five years of progressive experience in similar positions to include previous supervisory responsibilities.  Experience in a community college is highly desirable.  Teaching experience desirable.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Regular and recurring work is performed in a work environment that involves normal everyday low risks or discomforts typical of offices. Work areas are adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
