TITLE: DEAN OF LEARNING RESOURCES

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
General Statement of Duties:
Performs work of unusual difficulty in planning, developing, and
administering a complete program of library and multi-media learning services.
Supervision received: Administrative Direction
Supervision exercised: Upper level manager
RESPONSIBLE TO: Vice President of the College; Vice President
of Academic Affairs (as applicable)
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES*
Supervises
the selection, acquisition, cataloging, classification, circulation, and
maintenance of library and media materials.
Plans,
implements, and evaluates library instruction, services, print and electronic
resources.
Formulates
Evaluates
and implements appropriate trends in learning resource programs.
Supports
student success through the provision of relevant collections and technologies
for accessing and distributing library services.
Supervises
the review, evaluation, ordering, and purchase of library supplies, books, and
media materials.
Plans,
prepares, and administers department budget for operation within fiscal
constraints and maintains all financial records.
Plans and
conducts meetings with the Learning Resources Council to receive their input
and suggestions for the planning and coordination of the overall Learning
Resources operation. Also meets with the
Learning Resources staff.
Meets with
the Library Advisory Committee to receive input from the various components of
the College and keep them informed of LRC programs and needs.
Participates
in community and professional organizations, such as CORAL and the Texas
Library Association, to discuss and act on issues common to the academic and
community libraries.
Supervises
the interviewing and recommends hiring of new personnel; initiates or reviews
actions for reclassification and termination.
Supervises
training and development of staff including performance evaluation.
Supervises
the work of the Learning Resources faculty and staff with particular emphasis
on those staff members who are program coordinators and/or supervisors.
Represents
the College's Learning Resources operation in various councils and committees,
at both the College and District levels, to coordinate this operation with
others within the District and to express the need for various types of support
from other entities within the District.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge
of community college administration, operations, and practices.
Knowledge
of academic (college/university) administration, operations, and practices.
Comprehensive
knowledge of the principles and practices of Library Information Science.
Grant
writing/grant management skills preferred.
Considerable
knowledge of budgeting in an academic (college/university) environment.
Considerable
knowledge of technologies and end-user applications for LRCs/libraries.
Good
knowledge of federal and state fair employment practices, policies and
procedures.
Excellent
oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
Ability
to lead and function as a team member.
Ability to establish
and maintain effective working relations with colleagues and the community.
EDUCATION
Master’s
degree in Library Science or equivalent (MLIS) from an American Library
Association accredited program. Doctoral
degree preferred (PH.D. or Ed.D)
EXPERIENCE
Five (5)
years professional and management experience in a community college learning
resource center or academic library.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
No
substantial physical activity required.
