                                             TITLE:  DEAN OF HEALTH SCIENCES

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

 

General Statement of Duties:  Develops, implements, and directs Allied Health and Professional Education programs that are consistent with the objectives of the College and needs of the community.  Uses knowledge of planning, developing, and implementing allied health and professional education programs and policies meeting State, National, and Federal agency guidelines, accreditation, and certification standards.

 

Supervision received:  Administrative direction

 

Supervision exercised:  Upper-level manager

 

Responsible to:  Vice President

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

 

1.         Maintains liaison with cooperating agencies in administering programs, including coordinating with and researching of prospective employers for determining needed technical and professional programs for the placement of graduates.

 

2.         Coordinates, with the office of Institutional Research, follow-up studies of students to determine effectiveness of programs.

 

3.         Coordinates with professional accrediting bodies/agencies to insure program viability and integrity.

 

3.         Interviews and recommends hiring of new personnel; initiates and reviews action for terminations.

 

4.         Maintains records, inventories, and operating budget for maximum efficiency and accountability.

 

5.         Supervises, coordinates, and evaluates instructional programs.

 

6.         Serves on numerous councils and committees at the District or college level.

 

7.         Develops curriculum, area plans, and budgets for allied health and professional education programs.  Coordinates the development of the curriculum and class schedule in conjunction with Department Chairs and program directors.

 

8.         Publicizes and promotes the allied health and professional education programs in the community.

 

9.         Coordinates formulating and maintaining the academic standards for allied health and professional education programs.

 

10.       Assists in development of class schedules and teaching and space assignments for maximum space utilization.

 

11.       Represents College to the Coordinating Board, community, business, educational and other organizations regarding professional education and technology.

 

12.              Conducts regular Department Chair and Faculty meetings.

 

13.              Establishes linkages with health care providers in developing clinical training sites.

 

14.              Ensure appropriate reporting to professional licensing organizations and agencies.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

 

Demonstrated knowledge of and success in college administration.

 

Knowledge of professional/technical education curriculum and program development for the purposes of career preparation and updating, transfer, as well as industrial startup and development.

 

Knowledge of key technologies and technological areas as related to current and emerging allied education programs.

 

Knowledge of federal and state legislation pertaining to professional/technical education, employment practices, equal opportunity and affirmative action, licensing, and accreditation.

 

Knowledge of state coordinating and regulating agencies with specific emphasis on the Coordinating Board.

 

Demonstrated knowledge of budgeting, planning, monitoring, and accounting in a college/university environment.

 

Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

 

Knowledge of computer utilization and technology impact on professional education and technology.

 

 

EDUCATION:

 

Master's degree in a job-related area is required.  Doctorate preferred.

 

 

EXPERIENCE:

 

Five years of experience in college administration, allied health and/or professional program development, including teaching at the college level with a record of increasingly broad responsibilities.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT/WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

Regular and recurring work is performed in a work environment that involves normal everyday low risks or discomforts typical of offices.  Work areas are adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
