DESCRIPTION OF WORK
General Statement of Duties: Primarily responsible for leading the district-wide academic/instructional efforts of the Alamo Colleges. Provides leadership in implementing Board policy and cross-college operational procedures for academic success; establishing district-wide academic/instructional goals, objectives and priorities within the Strategic Plan; leading and guiding the development and implementation of cross-college programs and services to accomplish these goals and objectives; and for leading district-wide efforts to achieve academic/instructional targets, benchmarks and outcomes.
Supervision received: Administrative direction

*ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Assumes the primary responsibility for leading, administering, supervising, coordinating, reviewing, and evaluating the activities of district-wide academic services and programs including, but not limited to: Relevant Policies and Procedures; Cross-College Curriculum Development, Management, and Alignment; District-wide Academic Programs and Initiatives including Distance Education; and other related areas. Oversees the Alamo Colleges Strategic Planning and Performance Outcomes efforts for district-wide academic success.
Provides vision, direction and leadership in establishing shared standards, practices and processes to improve student academic success across the district.
Identifies district-wide academic priorities; initiates, evaluates and recommends policies and procedures; reviews and evaluates the effectiveness of programs and initiatives.
Partners closely with the Vice Chancellor of Economic Development and college presidents/vice-presidents to develop overall strategies that ensure credit and non-credit program success including district-wide program evaluation and continuous quality enhancement efforts.
Partners closely with the Vice Chancellor of Student Success to cooperatively lead the district-wide coordination of programs and strategies designed to enhance student access, retention, and success with primary responsibility for the academic aspects of such programs and strategies.
Partners closely with the Vice Chancellor for Administration and the Associate Vice Chancellor for Employee Services to inform, guide and assist with faculty processes such as those related to developing and updating faculty job descriptions/expectations, hiring procedures, evaluation, promotion, tenure, professional development, progressive discipline, and reward/recognition.
Partners closely with the Vice Chancellor for Planning, Performance and Information Services regarding internal data acquisition and distribution, data reporting to external agencies, and technology innovations/needs related to academic success.
Encourages, facilitates, and develops opportunities for district-wide cross-college dialogue and sharing regarding academic best practices.
Develops and maintains strong internal and external organizational relationships to advance district and college goals and to shape future programs; providing leadership for the district Academic Council, the Vice Presidents of Academic Affairs Planning Group; and other appropriate internal and external constituencies.
Provides guidance and support to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Partnerships and Initiatives responsible for developing effective P-16 academic initiatives with the District’s partner school districts and colleges/universities (such as the Pathways Program); coordinating transfer and articulation services and efforts; leading development of cross-college student academic initiatives that improve student retention, completion and graduation, and employment/transfer (such as Achieving the Dream); coordinating the development of a district-wide course inventory; and other special projects necessary to enhance and support the District Division of Academic Success.
Monitors legislation, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) rules/regulations to evaluate the impact on Alamo Colleges programs, and coordinates responses necessary to related policies, procedures and programs.
Assists the Colleges in facilitating the resolution of faculty or instructional issues which require district-level input to ensure a consistent and fair resolution with similar issues across the colleges.
Participates in the development of Alamo Colleges goals and objectives and in forming general policy recommendations and procedure revisions through shared responsibility with the Chancellor, Vice Chancellors, College Presidents/Vice Presidents and faculty, and assumes the district leadership role in academic policy development.
Serves on the Chancellor’s Executive Committee and Cabinet.
Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Chancellor.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
Demonstrated knowledge of the administrative functions of a multi-college or multi-campus college district
Knowledge of accreditation requirements and of federal, state, and local laws and regulations
High level of organizational skills
Student-centered leadership skills in fostering program development and program evaluation
Outstanding oral and written skills to articulate the Alamo Colleges policies and goals
Demonstrated excellent communication/interpersonal skills
Ability and commitment to developing a culture of evidence, including the use of outcome assessments to evaluate programs and services
Ability to work collaboratively with others in a large, diverse, and complex educational institution, including the use of shared governance processes
Ability to evaluate complex issues and problems and negotiate solutions
Ability to utilize computer technology to access data and communicate
Ability to manage people and issues and to make and communicate decisions effectively and in a timely manner
EDUCATION
Earned Doctorate degree from an accredited institution
EXPERIENCE
Service as Chief Academic Officer and/or have experience as a cabinet level administrator in a multi-college or multi-campus college district is required. A minimum of five years is preferred. Teaching experience is preferred.
