Assessment
Students with disabilities are able to complete all placement and Alternative
THEA testing in the dSS offices with accommodations/auxiliary aids that
are considered reasonable and appropriate based on documentation provided
by the student. All requests for assessment assistance must be
authorized by a dSS Counselor. Both the ACT ASSET and Accuplacer
test batteries are available in dSS. If the Alternative THEA must
be completed, payment of a $15.00 fee is required and payable in the
SAC Business Office (Fletcher Administration Center, Room 201).
To facilitate the registration process, all assessments should be completed
in a timely manner.

Verification of Disability and Authorization
of Accommodations/Auxiliary Aids
Although the entire college community is engaged in providing and improving
access for students with disabilities, the dSS program is the designated
office that receives and maintains disability-related documents, certifies
students' eligibility for services, determines reasonable accommodations/auxiliary
aids and develops plans for providing them. All accommodations/services
being requested must be supported by appropriate documentation. Click
here for more information on documentation.

Pre-Registration
Beginning approximately one month prior to the beginning of registration
for each semester, students registering with the dSS program can receive
pre-registration advising and authorization of services for the applicable
semester. If pre-registration is utilized, dSS faculty will complete
the official registration process on the first day registration becomes
available to SAC students. Students are encouraged to pre-register
to avoid lengthy waiting periods experienced just prior to the beginning
of each new semester.

Instruction
The dSS program offers optional, specialized sections of the SAC course
SDEV 0370, "Personal and Academic Success". These sections
are taught by dSS faculty (Counselors). Each section addresses
specific disability-related concerns and compensatory strategies as
well as SAC-specific policies and resources, academic and life-management
skills, including career exploration. These classes are typically
only available during the Fall semester and have limited enrollments.
Registration for these classes must be accomplished through the dSS
office. This course satisfies the SAC Orientation requirement.

Computer Laboratory
The dSS program provides an adaptive computer laboratory equipped with
specialized software and hardware for students’ academic and personal
use. All computers are connected to the internet. Several
computers are networked with the Reading and English department computer
laboratories to enable students who are enrolled in those developmental
courses to complete their lab work outside of class times. Any
required computer adaptations not already available should be coordinated
with the staff technician. Any adapted computer workstations needed
for classroom access must be authorized by a dSS Counselor and coordinated
with the staff technician prior to the beginning of the course.

Services for Students who are d/Deaf
The dSS program has been fortunate to partner with the
Interpreting for the Deaf / American Sign Language Department to
provide convenient comprehensive services for students who are d/Deaf.
Staffed by a Counselor (Jo Hilton,
785-6084) who is also a certified American Sign Language Interpreter,
students can access academic advising, registration, personal and career
counseling, and authorization and delivery of interpreting services
and other necessary accommodations without the need to communicate through
a "third party". Additionally, advanced Interpreting
majors (students) are often available to provide tutoring in Reading,
English and Mathematics. Services are available in the Nail
Technical Center, Room 004B. If there is a need to meet with a
counselor in CAC 124, and if an interpreter is needed, arrangements
for interpreting can be made with the unit receptionist. For information
on Tuition and Fee Exemption for Students who are d/Deaf, click
