JAPN 1411 (Elementary Japanese 1)

This course is designed for the students who have little knowledge of the Japanese language or have never taken a Japanese class. This class is four hours credit, therefore, one lab is required weekly. The goal of this course is that students should be able to communicate with Japanese speaking people in various situations by using survival Japanese by the end of this course. The primary Japnese written system "Hiragana" will be introduced, and also some Katakana and Kanji. Students who have had 70 hours of classroom exposure are encouraged to take the placement test for Japanese 1412 or consult with the Japanese instructer.

JAPN 1412 (Elementary Japanese 2)

This course is a coninuation of JAPN 1411 and therefore, a demonstrated mastery (C or above) of the basic skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) is recomended. The basic emphasis is meaningful communication, along with an increasing vocabulary and related facts of the culture. Katakana, a second syllabary form of writing is introduced, along with additional Kanji.

JAPN 1311(Beginning Conversation 1)

Primary emphasis is on speaking skills with some grammer. Students should acquire a basic functional vocabulary and familiarity with Japanese culture. Students should be able to communicate with Japanese people in various situations by using survival Japanese at the end of this course. This course is designed for the students who have little knowledge of the Japanese language or have never taken a Japanese class, therefore, students who have taken about 70 hours of Japanese lessons are encouraged to take the placement test for Japanese 1312 or consult with a Japanese instructor.

JAPN 1312 (Conversational Japanese2)

This course is a continuation of JAPN1311 and therefore, a demonstrated mastery (C or above) of the four basic skills is recommended. Primary emphasisis on speaking skills with grammar exercises. The students should acquire a functional vocabulary and develop a basic speaking skill and understanding of the Japanese culture.
