• Dart Center for Journalism & Trauma

  Created by Dr. Roger Johnson in 1991, Newswise was designed as an "online news service for universities and research institutions for knowledge-based news" and has a searchable archive of some 30,000 news stories.
  
• Pew Center for Civic Journalism
  Funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts, this resource has partnered with the Radio and Television News Directors Foundation, IRE, the Maynard Institute, NPR, PBS's Democracy Project, the Kettering Foundation, National Association of Black Journalists and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications "to help stimulate citizen involvement in community issues."

  Established in 1974, the SPLC is "devoted exclusively to educating high school and college journalists about the rights and responsibilities embodied in the First Amendment and supporting the student news media in their struggle to cover important issues free from censorship."

• Committee to Protect Journalists
  Established in 1981, this independent, nonprofit organization strives to "promote press freedom worldwide by defending the right of journalists to report the news without fear of reprisal. " Through a worldwide press monitoring system, the CPJ tracks current developments and effectively warns journalists and news organizations where attacks are occurring.
  
• The Free Expression Policy Project
  The FEPP "provides research and analysis on difficult censorship issues, and seeks free speech-friendly solutions to the concerns that drive censorship campaigns."

  Based in Arlington, VA., the Freedom Forum "is a nonpartisan foundation dedicated to free press, free speech and free spirit for all people," and focuses on three main priorities: the Newseum, First Amendment freedoms and newsroom diversity.

  Designed as a one-stop resource for best practices, useful lessons from the past, and effective strategies / tactics, freedominfo.org "contains crucial information on freedom of information laws and how they were drafted and implemented, including how various provisions have worked in practice."
  
• Humanitas International
  With a goal of "a fine balance of action and contemplation," Humanitas International provides free English translation services of current foreign language newspapers, online foreign language dictionaries, reports on freedom of the press, etc.
  
• Index on Censorship
  The Index compiles a country by country listing of freedom of speech incidents and reports on censorship issues across the globe in order "to protect the basic human right of free expression."
  
• International Journalists' Network
  The International Center for Journalists an independent, nonprofit organization that works to foster journalism ethics and expertise and improve "the quality of journalism worldwide, especially in countries with little or no tradition of an independent press."
  
• Press Freedom Survey
  Begun in 1980, the Freedom House has conducted an annual survey that "tracks trends in media freedom worldwide." It currently covers some 192 countries and 1 territory, and examines issues such as "the legal environment for the media, political pressures that influence reporting, and economic factors that affect access to information."
  
• Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press
  Created in 1970 to answer a U. S. government movement to subpoena reporters' confidential sources, the Committee has evolved into an international resource that champions free speech issues.
  
• Reporters Without Borders
  With more than one-third of the world's population living in countries without freedom of the press, Reporters Without Borders is an organization that "works constantly to restore their right to be informed."
  
• Women's Institute for Freedom of the Press
  Formed in 1972 by Dr. Donna Allen, the WIFP is a nonprofit organization "to increase communication among women and reach the public with our experience, perspectives, and opinions."
  
• World Press Freedom Committee
  Uniting some 44 organizations across the globe, the WPFC struggles to achieve a free press throughout the world through monitoring and coordinating activities, funding self-help legal grants, and sponsoring practical assistance programs.
