LATENT DENSITIES: DIALOG VIA CHEMIGRAMS These images continue my explorations of language. Language as grounded within the framework of the photographic medium. The images function as voice, source and carrier of information. Those presented are one side of a conversation. You, the viewer, provide extension of the dialog. The method used to create these images is that of the “Chemigram.” The chemigram, invented in 1956 by Belgian artist Pierre Cordier, is essentially a camera-less process that combines the physics of painting (in the application of a variety of resists) with the chemistry of the photographic process. The process is carried out under full light, exposing the whole of the photosensitive paper to establish the latent density. Areas of the paper are then coated, selectively, with the resists (using the tools of painting) which retard and/or prevent the chemical actions to follow. While utilizing the materials and chemistry of conventional photography, the chemigram produces image and material effects that extend the spectrum of the photographic art well beyond the conventional framework of what one quintessentially envisions when presented the term “photograph.” That extension allows one, via the distinctly non-linear methodology afforded by the chemigram process, to create imagery and form which present themselves with a painterly quality that could not be duplicated within the confines of the traditionally linear procedures of standard photographic practices. Each image presented is a unique statement in the conversation. Enjoy the dialog . . .
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Eduardo Rodriguez and his curatorial eye for my inclusion in this exhibition. Likewise, I thank Joan Grona and the Joan Groan Gallery for providing the venue. Michael C. Howell |
