The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories ( 1938 ). A play set during the Spanish Civil War and the three short-story collections plus a few new stories.
For Whom the Bell Tolls ( 1940 ). Novel about the Spanish Civil War.
Across the River and Into the Trees ( 1950 ). Silly novel set in Venice.
The Old Man and the Sea ( 1952 ). Santiago, an old fisherman, fights sharks to save his big catch.
