OPERATING TITLE:  DIRECTOR OF ACADEMIC SUPPORT SERVICES

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

 

General Statement of Duties:  Administers a program of courses and services which will benefit under-prepared students in the process of developing basic academic skills for college-level courses and for the world of work; administers program of Orientation for all students enrolled in nine or more semester hours of college work.

 

Supervision received:  Direction

 

Supervision exercised:  Supervises the Academic/Basic Skills Center personnel, faculty in the GED/ABE/ESL and Orientation programs, student assistants and work study students, classified, and professional personnel.

 

RESPONSIBLE TO:  Vice President of Student Affairs

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES*

 

Develops schedule of classes for GED/ABE/ESL courses.

 

Selects, supervises, and evaluates faculty members who teach non-credit GED/ABE/ESL and Orientation classes.

 

Coordinates program offerings with teaching faculty.

 

Attends meetings to keep current on developments which affect Developmental Education and basic skills instruction.

 

Assists in formulating policies and procedures to benefit under-prepared students.

 

Prepares material for the college catalog and other college publications.

 

Represents the Developmental Education program at local, state, regional, and national meetings.

 

Supervises the program planning and development in the area of developmental education, GED/ABE/ESL and Orientation.

 

Monitors the personnel in the basic skills learning center.

 

Assists in the evaluation of the developmental education, GED/ABE/ESL and Orientation programs and assigned personnel.

 

Collaborates with academic and student support personnel by chairing an advisory council on developmental education.

 

Develops and submits reports on accomplishments, objectives, and long-range plans for the Academic Support Services area.

 

Supervises the instructional efforts and learning activities of the non-credit basic skills courses.

 

Works with counselors and department chairpersons to develop, evaluate, and revise the criteria for placement in each developmental course.

 

Administers and supervises special projects sponsored by external funding sources and by the college through faculty release time.

 

Coordinates all of the professional development projects for personnel in developmental education, GED/ABE/ESL and Orientation programs.

 

*  Any one position may not include all of the tasks listed, nor do the examples necessarily include all of the tasks performed.  Other duties may be assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT

 

            Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

Effective oral and written communication skills and the ability to design and develop instructional programs for remedial students.

 

Comprehensive knowledge of remedial program components and methods of evaluating their effectiveness.

 

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships between those involved in the developmental education program and others within the College.

 

Ability to retrieve, analyze, and synthesize current data for reporting purposes.

 

EDUCATION

 

Master’s degree in education, reading, educational psychology, or a related field.

 

 

EXPERIENCE

 

Experience in teaching under-prepared students at the college level.  Some administrative or supervisory experience in a program, department, or college.  Experience in a bilingual/multicultural education setting preferred.
