OPERATING TITLE:  DIRECTOR OF COUNSELING & STUDENT DEVELOPMENT

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

 

General Statement of Duties:  Supervises and coordinates all activities relating to Testing and Assessment, Orientation and seminars, and Tutoring Services

 

Supervision received:  Administrative Direction

 

Supervision exercised:  Mid-level manager

 

RESPONSIBLE TO:  Dean of Educational Support Services

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES*

 

In coordination with the Dean of Educational Support Services, develops procedures for department in execution, and interpretation of District policy.

 

Coordinates the planning and budgetary process for all units.

 

Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of all professional student personnel workers.

 

Assists in the evaluation of all assigned personnel.

 

Assists in the planning and development in the areas of Student Development and Developmental Education.

 

Coordinates the administration of the Counseling Center.

 

Coordinates the administration of the Assessment Center.

 

Supervises or assists in the development of an effective freshman orientation program.

 

Monitors the delivery of tutorial services in coordination with the Director of Special Services.

 

Assists in formulating policies and procedures in addressing the needs or under-prepared students.

 

May serve on numerous committees within the District/college.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

Considerable knowledge of college administration.

 

Considerable knowledge of educational program planning related to the counseling and guidance operations.

 

Considerable knowledge and skill in supervising personnel.

 

Good knowledge of community college personnel policies and procedures.

 

Good knowledge of principles and practices of budgeting in an academic (college/university) environment.

 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow District employees, students, and the public.

 

Ability to organize and direct major work operations and work under pressure of deadlines.

 

EDUCATION

 

Master’s degree in Counseling or a related field such as Counseling Psychology or Social Psychology.

 

EXPERIENCE

 

Experience in student guidance and counseling, counseling, or related field such as education.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
