• Install anti-virus software and spy sweeper software on yoru computer. Update virus and spy definitions regularly.
• Keep your computer patched.
• Do not open strange email attachments or files
• Regularly backup your critical data.

Alamo Colleges ITS is in charge of raising security awareness at the district and to assist departments with security related issues. Before you share personal information on a website, verify that the page is secure.
A closed padlock will appear in the lower left corner or the right corner of your web browser. You may also find a “s” added to the familiar http://
- How do I delete my cookies and internet file?
• Open Internet Explorer
• Select tools in the menu bar
• Select Internet options from the drop down bar
• From the temporary internet files section
• Click delete cookies
• Click delete files
• Deletion is completed.
- How do I add a web site as a trusted site?
• Open Internet Explorer
• Select tools in the menu bar
• Select Internet Options from the drop down bar menu
• Select the Security tab
• Select trusted sites
• Click sites
• Enter the sites URL Ex. http://www.google.com
• Click add
• Click ok
• Site is now added to trusted sites. - How do I add a web site to Restricted Sites?
• Open Internet Explorer
• Select tools in the menu bar
• Select Internet Options from the drop down bar menu
• Select the Security tab
• Click on Restricted sites
• Click sites
• Enter URL of site Ex. http://www.google.com
• Click add
• Click ok
• Site is now a restricted site.
- How do I turn on the Pop-up blocker with in Internet Explorer?
• Open Internet Explorer
• Select tools in the menu bar
• Select Internet Options from the drop down bar menu • Select the Privacy tab
• With in the Pop-up Blocker section click block pop-ups • Click OK
• Pop-up blocker is now activated.
- How do I password protect a Word document?
• Create document as normal
• From the menu bar select tools
• From the tools drop down bar select options
• Select the security tab
• In the password section enter password
• Click OK
• You will be asked to confirm the password
• File is now password protected.
- How do I lock my desktop?
• Hit ctrl + Alt + Delete at one time
• Window Security dialog box will appear
• Click lock computer
• Computer is now locked
• Enter your password to unlock system.
- How do I perform a live update from Symantec?
• Open Symantec
• On the right click live updates
• The live update box will appear
• Click next
• Symantec will update
• Click finish
• Symantec update virus protection files dialog box will appear
• Files will be update
• Live update is complete.
- How do I schedule a Symantec scan?
• Open Symantec
• On the left click scheduled scan
• Click new scheduled scan
• Select the scan type
• Click next
• Name the scan and give the scan a description
• Click next
• Select when you want the scan to run
• Click next
• Click save
• Scheduled scan completed.
- How do I make Internet Explorer check to see if it is the default browser?
• Open Internet Explorer
• Select tools in the menu bar
• Select Internet options from the drop down menu
• Select Programs tab
• Check the box that states “Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser.”
• Click OK
- Users are given limited user account privileges why?
• Limits down loading of software, which could damage the integrity or the network.
• Restricts user from causing major changes to the pc. This is for support issues.
- Why do I have to take the IT Security Awareness Training and who is required to take the IT Security Awareness Training?
IT Security Awareness Training is a required training and all Alamo Colleges employees are encouraged to take this session. It is important to be aware of all the current security threats and the steps one can take to mitigate the risks.
