Faculty Abroad

Many opportunities exist for faculty to study abroad. The ACCD participates in a variety of federally funded grant programs for faculty bearing the Fulbright name.

Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad
[
http://www.ed.gov/programs/iegpsgpa/index.html] funded by the U.S. Department of Education, provides grants to support overseas projects in training, research, and curriculum development in modern foreign languages and area studies for teachers, students, and faculty engaged in a common endeavor. Projects may include short-term seminars, curriculum development, group research or study, or advanced intensive language programs.

In this program, applicants propose the program, purpose and itinerary. If successful, the winner then selects the participants (usually from their school or other schools in the geographic area) for the programs which are scheduled during the summer. Applications are generally due at the beginning of November each year and awards are generally announced in March of the following year.

The ACCD won a Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad grant in 2005. The project, entitled “The Faces of Mexico,” provided 15 faculty from the ACCD, Texas State University in San Marcos and Lanier High School in San Antonio, with a unique opportunity to study the pre-Colombian, colonial, revolutionary and modern history of Mexico. Covering more than 4,500 miles by bus, participants traveled through 17 states, visited 13 capital cities, toured dozens of museums and archeological sites and met scores of faculty and administrators from institutions of higher education.

Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad
[
http://www.ed.gov/programs/iegpssap/index.html], funded by the U.S. Department of Education, provides short-term study and travel seminars abroad for U.S. educators in the social sciences and humanities for the purpose of improving their understanding and knowledge of the peoples and cultures of other countries. Support is generally made available through interagency agreements. The Department of Education transfers funds through the State Department to Fulbright commissions in various countries to pay the costs associated with administering seminars. This partnership allows the program to use the services and expertise of bi-national organizations to plan and conduct seminars for U.S. educators.

Seminars Abroad invite individual participants to apply. If selected, a participant will travel with colleagues from diverse institutions nationwide. In contrast to the Group Projects Abroad, the purpose and itinerary for Seminars Abroad are administered by the U.S. Department of Education and host country Fulbright Commissions. Applications are generally due by the end of September each year and awards are announced the following spring for travel during the summer.

Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program
[
http://www.fulbrightexchanges.org]
Since 1946, the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program has helped nearly 23,000 teachers and administrators contribute to mutual understanding between the United States and countries around the world.

If you are a full-time U.S. teacher or administrator, you may be eligible to apply to the regular program.

For U.S. teachers, this opportunity involves a year or semester direct exchange with a counterpart in another country teaching the same subject(s) at the same level. Fulbright program staff in the U.S. and abroad matches U.S. and overseas candidates in the spring of each year. Fulbright staff then proposes matched-exchanges that each candidate and each school involved in the application process must approve before final selection to the program takes place. For more information about the grant process, see Selection and Grant Details. For a country listing of teacher exchanges and more information about country choices, see Country Index (Teacher Exchanges) [http://www.fulbrightexchanges.org/View/ViewCountryIndex.asp].

For U.S. administrators, the Fulbright program offers non-simultaneous work-shadowing assignments with an overseas counterpart. These exchanges may be from four to six weeks in length, but each partner must exchange to the other's school during the same academic year. For a country listing and more information about these opportunities, see Administrator Exchanges [http://www.fulbrightexchanges.org/base/administrator.asp].

Deadlines for applications under this program vary by country. See the Fulbright Exchanges [http://www.fulbrightexchanges.org] website for language requires and other details.
