Author
and lecturer Paul Loeb will present “Soul of
a Citizen: Living with Conviction in a Cynical Time”
at Northwest Vista College on September 21. Loeb will
speak on the importance of civic engagement and social
responsibility, especially among students. He will
also present a separate workshop to faculty on how
to teach in a service-oriented manner.
Loeb’s
critically acclaimed book, Soul of a Citizen: Living
with Conviction in a Cynical Time, examines what it
takes to lead lives of social commitment despite all
the obstacles. He has spent 30 years researching and
writing on the topic of civic engagement and has spoken
at more than 300 colleges and universities nationwide.
“At
a time when the nation is coming together to help
the devastated victims of Hurricane Katrina, Loeb’s
message of civic engagement is especially relevant,”
says Shelley Blagg, service learning coordinator at
Northwest Vista College.
In
addition to Soul of a Citizen, Loeb is the author
of Generation at the Crossroads: Apathy and Action
on the American Campus, Nuclear Culture and Hope in
Hard Times, and editor of The Impossible Will Take
a Little While. His writing has been covered by the
Associated Press and United Press International, cited
in Congressional debates, and discussed in a wide
array of publications. He is also a frequent commentator
on television and radio programs.
There
will be three presentations at 9:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m.
and 6:30 p.m. in the College Commons foyer, followed
by a faculty training session on civic engagement
from 3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. in the College Commons
banquet room. The event is free and open to the public.
