Announces Fall Fine Arts Lineup

A
series of student art exhibitions and a theatrical
production of “The Royal Hunt of the Sun”
will highlight the fall 2005 calendar of fine arts
events at St. Philip’s College. More information

The complete schedule of events and activities is
as follows:
SEPTEMBER
6 – 29, “Septiembre Invitational”
As
San Antonio celebrates Foto Septiembre, St. Philip’s
College showcases the work of photography students
from the fall 2004 and spring 2005 semesters. Curator
is art instructor Cristina E. Slaughter.
OCTOBER
4 - 27, "Cruz Ortiz: Prints" (opens Tuesday,
Oct. 4, 2005)
San
Antonio artist Cruz Ortiz exhibits prints which communicate
various aspects of "Chicano" life and culture.
The Pop style of work is created using the screen
printing process. Ortiz was recently named an international
artist-in-residence at ArtPace. He participated in
Contemporary Art Month's "Automatic Art Tour"
and organized and participated in the "1st Annual
Dignowity Hill Pushcart Derby." His work is exhibited
in the U.S. and Europe, and most recently in Norway.
NOVEMBER
1 - 28, Fall Student Show (opens Tuesday, Nov. 1,
2005)
This
annual exhibit is open to all St. Philip’s College
students who have taken studio classes during the
spring and fall 2005 semesters. A guest juror will
select works for special recognition in several categories
including “Best of Show.”
NOVEMBER
4-6 and 10-13,
“The Royal Hunt of the Sun,”
A
Shakespearean style production written by playwright
Peter Schaffer in 1964, tells the story of the conquering
of the Inca Empire by Spanish conquistador Francisco
Pizarro and his 180 men.
DECEMBER
6 - 19, Fine Arts Academy Exhibit (opens Tuesday,
Dec. 6, 2005)
The
St. Philip’s College Fine Arts Academy is dedicated
to providing a college level education to area high
school students who are interested in the Fine Arts.
Participants work in a variety of media and are able
to exhibit their works.
The
mission of the Department of Fine Arts at St. Philip’s
College is to present curricula designed to stimulate
creative thinking, provide instruction which will
instill competency and a working knowledge of all
artistic elements; and teach, enrich, and guide each
student to fulfill his or her artistic potential.
The department assists in developing pathways and
priorities for future growth in personal, professional,
and community artistic activities through performances,
exhibitions, and interactive means of participation,
serving as a source of support for community talent
and creative activities
St.
Philip’s College, one of the Alamo Community
Colleges serving the greater Bexar County region,
is a comprehensive community college designated as
both a Historically Black College and a Hispanic Serving
Institution. St. Philip’s College is accredited
by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association
of Colleges and Schools. -
