The
Alamo Community College District (ACCD) has offered
its support and assistance to 12 community colleges/districts
in areas expected to be affected by Hurricane Rita.
“We
want you to know that our thoughts and prayers are
with you and your families at this difficult time,”
wrote ACCD Acting Chancellor Dr. Dan Derrico in an
email to the heads of the 12 institutions. He pledged
that the ACCD would work with the affected colleges
“in any way that we can to help you recover
from the effects of Hurricane Rita, including helping
your students, if necessary, to resume their college
classes as soon as possible.”
In his
email, Derrico noted that the ACCD and its colleges
have been active in providing support to Hurricane
Katrina evacuees in San Antonio. These efforts have
included short-term workshops and job training classes,
as well as assistance with college enrollment. Derrico
expressed confidence that ACCD’s experience
with those affected by Katrina would be invaluable
in assisting evacuees from Hurricane Rita.
Derrico
was joined in the email by the five ACCD college presidents,
who offered their willingness to be of assistance
as well.
The email
was sent to the chief administrators of: Alvin Community
College; Brazosport College; Coastal Bend College;
College of the Mainland; Del Mar College; Galveston
College; the Houston Community College System; Lee
College; the North Harris Montgomery Community College
District; San Jacinto College; Victoria Community
College and Wharton Community College.
