At
a recent conference held by the National Association
of Biology Teachers (NABT), Northwest Vista College
biology instructor Jose Luis Egremy received the Two-Year
College Biology Teaching Award. The award honors a
two-year college biology educator who employs new
and creative techniques in classroom teaching.
Jose
was nominated by NVC faculty members, who sent recommendation
letters outlining his accomplishments to the NABT
awards committee.
Since
arriving at NVC in 2002, Jose has been named the Pharmacy
Technology coordinator and founded the International
Studies Abroad Program in Costa Rica. He also teaches
botany in Costa Rica every summer.
One
of his proudest moments as an educator came earlier
this year when one of his students presented at the
Texas Academy of Science on the topic of "Antibiotic
Properties of Bryophytes in Costa Rica" and received
second place at the collegiate level.
In
2005, Jose was appointed a member of the National
Association of Biology Teachers Internationalization
Committee. He remains active in the scientific community
by publishing articles in various publications and
presenting his research and teaching strategies at
annual conferences.
The
NABT conference was held in Milwaukee, WI from October
4-8. Jose was accompanied by fellow faculty members
Susan Alcala and Claudia Verdin. Also in attendance
were biology teachers from high schools and two- and
four-year colleges and universities from the U.S.,
Puerto Rico, Latin America and Europe. At the conference,
Jose presented a workshop on the "Central Dogma of
Biology," which drew many attendees.
