St.
Philip’s College will delve into the Hip-Hop
culture when it presents a guest lecture by Lasana
O. Hotep titled “Hip-Hop: An International Youth
Movement” on Tuesday, Nov. 15. Hotep is scheduled
to deliver a noon talk in the theatre of the Watson
Fine Arts Center on the main campus (1801 Martin Luther
King Drive.) The lecture, sponsored by the St. Philip’s
College Office of Student Life, is free and open to
the public.
Hotep’s
multimedia presentation will cover the environment
in which Hip-Hop was born, its elements, and the global
response to the movement along with challenges and
opportunities found within the culture. More information
is available by calling 531-3241.
When
Hotep isn’t lecturing, he serves as program
coordinator of the African American Men of Arizona
State University Program at Arizona State University.
The program, which focuses on self-development through
holistic programming at the academic, civic, cultural,
corporate and social levels, aims to prepare participants
for service to the greater community in Tempe.
Hotep,
who also is a researcher, consultant and entrepreneur,
is actively committed to inciting critical thought
about society, culture and politics through his presentations.
He delivers a message that is informational, inspirational
and at best, transformational. His areas of expertise
include African and African-American history, leadership
development, African American male retention and Hip-Hop
history and culture.
St.
Philip’s College, one of the Alamo Community
Colleges serving the greater Bexar County region,
is a comprehensive community college designated as
both a Historically Black College and a Hispanic Serving
Institution. St. Philip’s College is accredited
