On
Friday, November 4, Northwest Vista College welcomed
over 200 students from John Jay High School for the
third annual "Jay Day."
Students
spent the day in informative and interactive workshops
on financial aid, cyber space education, sociology,
art appreciation, multimedia music and video editing,
college writing and biotechnology. Students attending
Neil McCrary's biotechnology session had front row
seats to a simulated crime scene, where they learned
how to collect and process DNA samples using tools
of the biotech lab. Recruiters from various community
colleges and four-year universities were also in attendance
to provide students with information.
"Jay
Day provides an opportunity for NVC faculty and staff
to connect with high school students in the community,"
explains Jay Day organizer and campus recruiter Pati
Garza. "It's important to demonstrate to students
that college can be a realistic, attainable goal for
them to pursue."
Through
a random drawing, two Jay High School seniors were
awarded scholarships to attend NVC. Each student will
receive a check for $1,000.
"I
would like to thank everyone who helped make our third
annual Jay Day a tremendous success," says Pati. "Whether
they taught a session or helped fold T-shirts, this
event wouldn't have been possible without their contributions."
