Alto College is offering a four-level program of the
CISCO networking system beginning in the Spring Semester
2006. Upon completion of the course requirements that
must be taken in sequence, students may apply for
certification as a CISCO Certified Network Associate
or continue working towards an Associate of Applied
Science degree in Network Administrating.
CCNA
certified professionals are able to install, configure
and operate LAN and WAN, and to dial access services
for small networks. Instruction is web-based with
hands-on training in computer labs, where students
build local and wide area networks that comply with
real-world settings.
Levels
I and III are offered in the spring. Level I meets
on Monday and Level III on Wednesday, both from 6:30
to 9 p.m. at KellyUSA in the Advanced Technology Center.
Classes begin on Jan. 9, 2006.
The
four levels of course work include:
I.
Networking Basics‹an introduction to networking
that includes terminology, local area networks (LAN)
and wide area networks (WAN). Topics include network
protocols such as TCP/IP, Open System Interconnection
(OSI) models, cabling and routers.
II.
Router and Routing Basics‹an introduction to
basic CISCO router configuration for local area networks.
Topics include initial router configuration for TCP/IP,
management of CISCO IOS and router configuration files,
routing protocols, and access control lists.
III.
Switching Basic and Intermediate Routing‹focuses
on advanced topics including IP addressing techniques,
intermediate routing protocols, CLI configuration
of switches, Ethernet switching, VLANs, Spanning Tree
Protocol, and VLAN Trunking Protocol.
IV.
WAN Technologies‹focuses on advanced IP addressing
techniques (Network Address Translations [NAT], Port
Address Translation [PAT], and SHCP), WAN technology
and terminology, PPP, ISDN, DDR, Frame Relay, network
management and introduction to optical networking.
In addition, the student will prepare for the CNNA
