PAC Offering a Four-Level CISCO Networking Systems Program

Palo Alto College is offering a four-level program of the CISCO networking system beginning in the Spring Semester 2006. Upon completion of the course requirements that must be taken in sequence, students may apply for certification as a CISCO Certified Network Associate or continue working towards an Associate of Applied Science degree in Network Administrating.

CCNA certified professionals are able to install, configure and operate LAN and WAN, and to dial access services for small networks. Instruction is web-based with hands-on training in computer labs, where students build local and wide area networks that comply with real-world settings.

Levels I and III are offered in the spring. Level I meets on Monday and Level III on Wednesday, both from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at KellyUSA in the Advanced Technology Center. Classes begin on Jan. 9, 2006.

The four levels of course work include:

I. Networking Basics‹an introduction to networking that includes terminology, local area networks (LAN) and wide area networks (WAN). Topics include network protocols such as TCP/IP, Open System Interconnection (OSI) models, cabling and routers.

II. Router and Routing Basics‹an introduction to basic CISCO router configuration for local area networks. Topics include initial router configuration for TCP/IP, management of CISCO IOS and router configuration files, routing protocols, and access control lists.

III. Switching Basic and Intermediate Routing‹focuses on advanced topics including IP addressing techniques, intermediate routing protocols, CLI configuration of switches, Ethernet switching, VLANs, Spanning Tree Protocol, and VLAN Trunking Protocol.

IV. WAN Technologies‹focuses on advanced IP addressing techniques (Network Address Translations [NAT], Port Address Translation [PAT], and SHCP), WAN technology and terminology, PPP, ISDN, DDR, Frame Relay, network management and introduction to optical networking. In addition, the student will prepare for the CNNA exam.
