The San Antonio
College Women's Center has been awarded a $5,000 grant from
the Alice Kleberg Reynolds Meyer Foundation to fund the WE
(Women Empowered) Conference, which is scheduled for May 14,
2005.
The WE Conference is a recruitment and outreach event for
low-income, adult women, with an emphasis on single parents,
displaced homemakers, adult learners, welfare-to-work program
participants, and GED graduates whose education has been interrupted.
The Alice Kleberg Reynolds Meyer Foundation funded the 2004
WE Conference, with more than 300 women attending and 13 receiving
$10,000 in scholarships from the City of San Antonio and other
women's organizations to enroll at San Antonio College.
Co-sponsored by the Mayor's Commission for the Status of Women
and the Hispanic Women's Network of Texas, the WE Conference
includes inspirational speakers and workshops providing information
about furthering their education and opportunities for the
future.
The San Antonio College Women's Center was established in
1981 to serve adult re-entry women and made 3,000 contacts
in its first year. In the 2002-2003 academic year alone, the
Center served 21,453 people with its expanded mission to serve
non-traditional college students, single parents, dislocated
workers, welfare recipients, and first-generation college
students. About 75 percent are Latinas who are academically
and economically disadvantaged.
The Alice Kleberg Reynolds Meyer Foundation is a Bexar County
private foundation serving to enhance the lives in the communities
of 50 South and Central Texas counties.
