On
Thursday, September 7, Northwest Vista College hosted
a JUMP! Night for the first group of students who
are part of the Joint Undergraduate Matriculation
Program (JUMP!). The program is a partnership
with the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA)
to provide college access to students who did not
meet UTSA's published admission criteria for incoming
freshmen but did receive deferred admission to UTSA.
JUMP! offers students the opportunity to begin college
as a freshman at Northwest Vista, where they can complete
either the UTSA or NVC core curriculum.
"Northwest
Vista College works closely with UTSA, and the JUMP!
program is one of many partnerships we have," explains
Dr. Jacqueline Claunch, Northwest Vista College President.
"In this case, the students who need help the most
are getting assistance so that they do not have to
delay their higher education pursuit."
A welcome
reception for JUMP! students and their families was
followed on Thursday by an overview presentation of
benefits for joining the program. Students learned
that they have a dedicated NVC advisor who can guide
them and ensure that the courses they are taking will
be transferable to UTSA.
Eddite
Treviņo-Garza is one of 25 currently enrolled JUMP!
students. He attended the welcome reception
and thought it was a good idea.
"It was
very nice and informative, they gave a lot of detail
about the program and I learned a lot," said Treviņo-Garza.
He also
went on to say he is excited to be at Northwest Vista
College. "I'm looking forward to completing the
program."
Tim Molina,
Transfer Team Leader and Advisor for JUMP! students
at Northwest Vista College, says those "students who
successfully complete either 42 core hours for UTSA
or 46 core hours for NVC with a minimum of 2.0 Grade
Point Average [and are in good academic and social
standing], will be guaranteed admission to UTSA as
transfer students." In addition, they will receive
an associate degree from Northwest Vista College.
Another
benefit for students enrolled in the program includes
a waived application fee to UTSA when reapplying,
and possible eligibility for a $2,000 scholarship
to complete upper division coursework once they arrive
at UTSA, in addition to other financial aid they may
be eligible for.
The JUMP!
Night concluded with a question and answer session
for students who had many inquiries for George Norton,
Assistant Vice President for Admissions, Orientation
and Transition Services at UTSA, who also attended
the session. He assured students about the support
system that has been set up for them to ensure their
success in higher education.
Debi Gaitan,
Interim Dean of Student Success at Northwest Vista
College, has been working with George Norton for the
past year to create the program. She says it has been
a wonderful collaboration working with UTSA.
"We are
very excited to make access to college one of our
top priorities. It is in our strategic plan for the
college and the district, and it has impact on the
lives of students and the contribution they will bring
to our community."
