The
Alamo Community College District (ACCD) celebrated
the grand opening today of Northeast Lakeview College’s
new Northeast Campus, which will provide the northeast
Bexar County community with a state-of-the-art educational
facility that can accommodate up to 4,000 students.
“Today’s
event represents many years of hard work and dedication
on the part of many people,” said ACCD Interim
Chancellor Dr. Daniel Derrico. “Arriving at
this point has been a very collaborative process,
and it would not have been possible without the commitment
and involvement of the community here,” he added.
“This
facility was carefully planned to offer our students
an attractive and functional environment for learning”
said Northeast Lakeview College President Dr. Eric
Reno. “We have everything here on site to serve
our students, from the library and the bookstore to
the bursar’s and financial aid offices.”
The spacious
75,000-square-foot campus, located at 8300 Pat Booker
Road near the intersection of Loop 1604 NE and Pat
Booker Road, also features 34 classrooms, plus science
and language labs, a dance studio and art studio,
a student lounge, a music room, tutoring center, student
services office and Cyber Cafe.
Students
who are taking classes at the new campus this fall
are enrolled at San Antonio College and St. Philip’s
College, while Northeast Lakeview College completes
the accreditation process. The campus offers a full
complement of courses so that students can complete
a degree or certification, or take the first two years
toward a bachelor degree, all at the new campus. Currently,
more than 2,400 students are enrolled at the campus.
The opening
of the new Northeast Campus is the latest effort by
ACCD to meet the educational needs of the rapidly
growing population in northeast Bexar County. Next
spring, these efforts will culminate in the construction
of the main campus of Northeast Lakeview College on
a 238-acre site at Kitty Hawk Road and Loop 1604.
The first classes there will be held in fall 2008.
Even after the opening of the new college, the Northeast
Campus site will continue to be used to house academic
programs and student services.
The Alamo
Community College District is one district comprised
of five colleges—San Antonio College, St. Philip’s
College, Palo Alto College, Northwest Vista College
and the soon-to-be Northeast Lakeview College—which
enroll more than 49,000 students each semester.
