In
September, Northwest Vista College became a certified
Microsoft IT Academy. The IT program is designed to
help students master technology skills that prepare
them for today's workplace, and to provide workers
with additional training opportunities that can advance
their current career.
Northwest
Vista received the IT Pro Platinum membership level,
which will provide the college with comprehensive
curriculum and workforce development resources, including:
- textbooks
and courseware libraries
- online
and other e-learning resources
- faculty
training
- courseware
and certification discounts
- shared
branding with Microsoft
- assistance
with job and internship opportunities
At the
IT Pro Platinum level, certified NVC faculty members
will be able to teach courses in Microsoft Certified
Professional and Microsoft Office Specialist.
"The curriculum
used for the Microsoft IT Academy is real-world hands-on
training that will enable students to further their
Information Technology career path," explains Dr.
Warren Mack, program coordinator for computer support
and computer forensics at NVC. "In addition, the students
enrolled in the academy receive substantial discounts
on the Microsoft certification exams, which validate
the knowledge that they have gained in the classroom
and through their work experience."
Northwest
Vista applied for membership in the program in July
2006 and will be certified for one year from September.
"The Microsoft
Academy will provide students with the credentials
to compete in a certification-based industry," says
John Grillo, academic leader for social and computer
sciences. "In addition, we will focus much of our
efforts on lab-based, hands-on skills training. The
Academy will meet both of these goals."
