Lackland AFB - Not Just for Military

October 2, 2006

It is a common misconception that civilian students are not permitted to take classes on the local military bases. In fact, civilians are welcome and regularly make up one third to one half of all enrollments on Lackland AFB. St. Philip’s College has a long established academic program on Lackland, spanning more than 20 years. Each semester a wide variety of academic courses are available including, English, history, government, developmental and college level math, social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences.

Flexible 8 week evening classes are formatted with the returning adult student in mind. Many students manage full time enrollment while working full time. Ms. Betsy Hamilton, Off Site Coordinator for St. Philip’s College on Lackland, states, “The program on Lackland is significant and growing. In 2005, the Lackland site offered approximately 125 St. Philip’s College courses and labs with over 2100 enrollments.”

Ms. Hamilton is proud of the program and boasts about the facilities and new technologies supporting Lackland AFB courses. “We have fabulous accommodations including two computer labs with high speed internet and each classroom is equipped with SMART Board™ technology. This allows for wonderful audio and visual support and real time internet connectivity to enhance classroom instruction.”

The Lackland AFB program has three full time staff members with over 35 years of combined military and adult education experience. The Lackland AFB Team understands returning adult students and strives to remove educational barriers that would hinder academic achievement and assist students in reaching their educational goals.

If you are a current student and would like to take your courses in an accelerated format, call the SPC Lackland AFB Team at 670-1041 for specific directions and procedures to obtain a base pass for your Lackland AFB class. Civilian students must be able to present their student schedule showing enrollment into a LAFB course, their driver's license, proof of vehicle insurance and vehicle registration to obtain a pass. The next term begins October 23rd. View the Lackland AFB schedule at:
