The students interviewed Dr. Paredes and other education leaders during a recent trip to Austin.

As a part of their leadership development, six students from the San Antonio College Student Leadership Academy recently traveled with faculty advisors to Austin to interview key figures in Texas higher education and to tour several facilities.

Students Jonathan Bustamante, JesseKa Almanza, Vanessa De Leon, Joey Reyes, Karina Vargas, and Citalli Sanchez interviewed Dr. Raymund Paredes, commissioner of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board; Dr. Norma Cantu, UT-Austin law professor and former U.S. assistant secretary for education; and Dr. William Cunningham, former UT-Austin president and chancellor and currently James L. Bayless chair for Free Enterprise Department of Marketing at the McCombs School of Business.

They discussed a variety of issues, including their vision for higher education in Texas, paths to successful careers, and challenges for future generations in higher education, according to Sylvia De Leon, advisor to the SAC Leadership Academy, professor and coordinator of the Public Administration Program.

In addition, the students toured the University of Texas at Austin Law School and Legal Research Center and the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library. De Leon said the students learned about Johnson's initiatives to increase higher education opportunities, such as financial aid for higher education and civil rights legislation.
