In celebration
of International Education Week, the Alamo Community
College District (ACCD) will host a kickoff event
on Monday, November 13, at noon in the Community Meeting
Room of the ACCD’s George E. Killen Community
Education and Service Center at 201 W. Sheridan. The
event is free and open to the public.
Blake Hastings,
executive director of the Free Trade Alliance San
Antonio, will deliver the keynote address. Also speaking
at the event will be Sheila D. McNeil, District 9
city councilwoman, Fulbright Exchange Teachers Professor
Xuefeng Bai from China and Professor Maria Rosa Marcovechio
from Argentina, Ana Vigil of El Salvador and Forby
Williams of Nicaragua, students from the CASS (Central
American States for Scholar-ship Students) program
who are currently attending ACCD colleges, and Dr.
Eduardo Conrado, director of the ACCD Office of International
Programs.
“A
global perspective and an understanding of many different
cultures and attitudes is vital to our students as
well as our entire community,” said ACCD Chancellor
Dr. Bruce H. Leslie. “This event is part of
our ongoing efforts to provide a global perspective
for our students that will prepare them for success
in today’s interconnected world.”
The objectives
of the Free Trade Alliance San Antonio are to: attract
foreign and trade-related businesses by marketing
and amplifying San Antonio’s international advantages;
assist San Antonio area businesses in expanding their
international interests; and enhance San Antonio’s
international trade infrastructure and position through
advocacy and project development initiatives.
The observance
of International Education Week began in 2000 as part
of a larger response by the State Department and Department
of Education to an April 19, 2000 Presidential Directive
aimed at increasing support for international education.
The week is intended as a global forum for promoting
and celebrating the benefits of international education.
International
Education Week events will be celebrated November
13-17 at all four of the ACCD’s colleges—Northwest
Vista College, Palo Alto College, St. Philip’s
College and San Antonio College. Events will include
film festivals, speakers, displays and international
cuisine tastings.

Lagaan ("Land Tax/Lagaan: Once Upon a Time
in India") (2001) - India: A remarkable
story about the triumph of the ordinary set
in 1890s India. The ruling British have imposed
a harsh tax (lagaan) on the farmers, prompting
the villagers of Champaner to plead for a waiver.
So an arrogant and capricious British commander,
Capt. Russell, challenges the villagers to a
cricket match: if the villagers win, they'll
avoid taxation for three years; if they lose
they'll pay the tax three times over.

to discover he isn't alone, kept company by
a crying infant in the back seat. He grudgingly
