At
their retreat this past weekend, the Alamo Community
College District (ACCD) Board of Trustees and Chancellor
Dr. Bruce H. Leslie laid the groundwork for a strategy
that will ultimately result in ACCD becoming the best
community college district in the nation.
According
to ACCD Board Chairman Roberto Zarate, rapid regional
growth requires the development of a sixth college
and necessitates expansion of the district’s
strategic planning process to determine the appropriate
district-wide culture that will strengthen the district’s
focus on student success.
“The
opportunity to be the best challenges us to maximize
every student’s capacity to achieve his or her
personal, professional and academic goals and every
business and non-profit customer’s ability to
benefit fully from ACCD’s services and assistance,”
said Zarate. “Becoming the best also entails
a clear commitment across the district to our strategic
plan and the development of clear, shared values and
standards that will provide the highest quality education
regardless of which ACCD college a student attends,”
he added.
To achieve
the goal of becoming the best community college district
in the nation, the board has charged Chancellor Leslie
to engage the entire college district and the community
in a process to define the necessary culture that
will achieve ACCD’s vision of student success.
He is also charged with eliminating any structural
academic, student support, organizational or employee
barriers through a “culture of evidence,”
leading to a system of continuous assessment, experimentation,
innovation, collaboration and improvement in an environment
that will make ACCD a “best place” to
learn and work. The board has further charged Chancellor
Leslie with fulfilling the district’s commitment
to the “Achieving the Dream” initiative
across the district and pursuing the Baldrige Award
as foundations for the district-wide strategic plan
that will result in ACCD becoming the best community
college in the nation.
The Alamo
Community College District is one district comprised
of four colleges—San Antonio College, St. Philip’s
College, Palo Alto College and Northwest Vista College.
A fifth college, Northeast Lakeview College, is in
the the process of seeking accreditation.
