The
westside community came together today to celebrate
the grand opening of the Alamo Community College District’s(ACCD)
Westside Education and Training Center (WETC). The
center, a joint effort of ACCD, Edgewood ISD and the
City of San Anto-nio, offers community members the
opportunity to take classes that will train them for
high-paying jobs, provide them with basic job skills
or let them work toward a college degree right in
their neighborhood.
“This
center is part of our continued efforts to make educational
opportunities more accessible to our community,”
said ACCD Chancellor Dr. Bruce H. Leslie. “It
would not have been possible without the efforts of
the Edgewood district and the city and the hard work
and commitment of many people,” he added.
“It
is something that is long overdue. It definitely is
a big shot in the arm for all of us here,” said
Edgewood ISD Superintendent Richard M. Bocanegra.
“Edgewood is working in a partnership with ACCD
and the City of San Antonio. The center will provide
training and education that will strengthen the future
for all citizens of San Antonio,” he added.
The newly
renovated, 31,000-square-foot building at 563 SW 40th
Street features 11 classrooms, a technical skills
assessment lab, an open computer lab for students
and community members, a 2,500-square-foot manufacturing
technology lab and offices for faculty and staff.
The WETC
offers academic, technical and workforce training
classes, including GED, English as a Second Language,
water treatment, community health, certified nursing
assistant, production worker and financial customer
service. A total of 360 students are currently enrolled
at the center, which began offering classes this fall.
The facility
also houses ACCD’s Westside Community Education
Center, which offers enrollment processing, skills
assessment, financial aid assistance, registration
information and assistance, information on the ACCD
colleges and career exploration. These services are
available to prospective students who wish to take
classes at the WETC or at one of the ACCD colleges.
The
Alamo Community College District is one district comprised
of four colleges—San Antonio College, St. Philip’s
College, Palo Alto College and Northwest Vista College.
A fifth college, Northeast Lakeview College, is in
the the process of seeking accreditation.
