On November 8, 2006, the Career & Transfer Services (C.a.T.S.) Center at Northwest Vista College hosted "Major Mania." Previously known as "Meet Your Match," this year's career and transfer fair featured a new approach to guiding students toward their educational and career goals.

"The purpose behind Major Mania is to provide students with information about all programs at NVC, as well as the many career opportunities that the majors can provide," explains C.a.T.S. coordinator Jo Garcia.

During the "Major Mania" event, students were sent on an Information Scavenger Hunt to obtain details about different majors. There were 36 tables and over 80 faculty in attendance to answer students' questions and provide information about their respective career fields.

During the event, another available service was "CaTS on the Go!" A small computer lab was set up in the Student Lounge for students to do online career assessments, Texas Common Application, or browse the Web for Spring 2007 classes to get a headstart on registration. C.a.T.S. Transfer Team Leader and Advisor, Tim Molina, was on hand to do quick advising and transfer planning as well.

On March 21, 2007, a spring "Major Mania" will be held for NVC students, as well as high school seniors from area schools.

Following are some survey results from the "Major Mania" evaluations:

Of the 234 students that signed in, 36.32 percent completed the Scavenger Hunt (85 out of 234).

  • 69.45 percent definitely plan to further their education beyond NVC
  • 24.7 percent feel that affordability would prevent them from furthering their education
  • 13 percent feel that the one issue that would prevent them from furthering their education was not knowing what steps are needed to transfer
  • 22 percent feel that family obligations would prevent them from furthering their education
  • 47 percent of students expect to pursue a Bachelor's degree
  • 24 percent expect to pursue graduate school
  • First Time in College students (FTICs) - 35 percent; 37 percent not FTICs
  • 36.47 percent plan to transfer to UTSA; 33 percent plan to transfer to other schools; 13 percent plan to transfer to another ACCD college
  • 68 percent that participated have declared a major; 32 percent are undeclared
  • 38 percent said that Major Mania gave them information that can help them decide on a major
  • 37 percent utilized C.a.T.S. on the Go service
  • 84 percent (72 students out of 85) believed that Major Mania gave them an awareness of NVC majors, programs, and their educational goals
