On
April 5th, the Alamo Community College District (ACCD)
broke ground on its newest college, Northeast Lakeview
College. Construction of this new campus is a result
of the 2005 bond election. The $125M project will
house over 365,000 square feet of academic and learning
space. To be housed off Kitty Hawk Road and Loop 1604
in northeast Bexar County, the new Northeast Lakeview
College campus will open its doors in Fall 2008.
Currently,
Northeast Lakeview College is housed in a smaller
facility on Pat Booker Road and operates under a partnership
with San Antonio College and St. Philip’s College
and offers a full course selection. In Fall 2007,
it will begin offering full degree plans including
A.A. and A.S. degrees. Enrollment has grown rapidly,
enrolling only 500 students in 2001 to more than 3,050
today. Northeast Lakeview College will eventually
accommodate over 15,000 community college students
from northeast San Antonio and Bexar, Comal and Guadalupe
Counties.
In
addition, Northeast Lakeview College has partnered
with Judson ISD to construct an Early College Partnership
(ECP) High School. The passage of Proposition 4 in
Judson’s 2006 bond issue sets aside $12 million
for the creation of a 400-600-student college preparatory
campus on the grounds of the future 238-acre, $125
million Northeast Lakeview College campus. ECP is
designed to help students earn both a high school
diploma and a two-year college associate’s degree
within five years.
Northeast
Lakeview College History
Northeast Lakeview College was officially established
in January 2007 as the fifth member of the Alamo Community
Colleges. However, the campus traces its beginnings
back to 1998 as the district’s Northeast Campus,
an extension of St. Philip’s College and San
Antonio College. In June 2000, ACCD purchased a site
at 7990 Pat Booker Road with the first classes being
held at Northeast Campus in 2001, enrolling many of
the students who had previously attended classes at
St. Philip’s College’s Northeast Center
on Topperwein. Classes were held at this location
until 2006 when ACCD purchased and renovated a former
grocery store at 8300 Pat Booker Road, its current
location. Enrollment continues to grow rapidly, increasing
from 500 students in 2001 to more than 3,050 today.
The new Northeast Lakeview College campus is scheduled
to open in Fall 2008.
