Community
members, business leaders and public officials took
advantage of a unique opportunity today to see first-hand
the fruits of the Alamo Community Colleges’
$450 million bond issue, which is funding new construction
and improvements at each of the Alamo Community Colleges’
five colleges.
Attendees
at the event, “Delivering the Dream—Alamo
Community Colleges Design Exposition,” studied
full-color displays of the college construction projects,
while representatives from the firms employed on each
project and Alamo Community Colleges’ staff
answered questions. At noon, they listened as Mayor
Phil Hardberger, Tom C. Frost, Jr., County Commissioner
Paul Elizondo, Alamo Community Colleges’ Board
Chairman Roberto Zarate, Alamo Community Colleges’
Trustee Charles Conner and Chancellor Bruce H. Leslie
presented additional information on the bond projects.
“We
would like to again express our gratitude to the voters
for their foresight in approving the funds that have
made it possible for us to expand our facilities to
accommodate our growing enrollment and meet the community’s
needs,” said ACCD Board Chairman Roberto Zarate.
“We
wanted the broadest possible audience to be able to
see and hear everything they want to know about what
the bond funding has made possible” said Leslie.
“A great deal of thought, planning and work
has gone into assuring that these funds will help
us reach a new level of excellence the community can
be proud of,” he added.
Construction
projects funded by the bond, which was approved by
Bexar County voters in November 2005, are:
• Construction of Northeast Lakeview College
• Two academic buildings, a library, a commons
building and a theatre and fine arts
facility at Northwest Vista College
• A parking garage, academic building and nursing
and allied health facility at San
Antonio College
• Parking lots and a nursing/library/one-stop
center at St. Philip’s College
• A Diesel Lab at St. Philip’s College’s
Southwest Campus
• A convocation center, veterinary technology
building, a workforce education facility,
parking lots and renovations to six buildings at Palo
Alto College
• District-wide information technology improvements.
The
Alamo Community Colleges consist of five colleges
serving the Bexar County area: Palo Alto College,
St. Philip’s College, San Antonio College, Northeast
Lakeview College and Northwest Vista College. The
Alamo Community Colleges serve more than 75,000 students
each semester. For more information about the Alamo
Community Colleges and the bond projects, visit the
