Northwest
Vista College and Palo Alto College dance students
will join the San Antonio Dance Umbrella in a free
performance celebrating the life of Dora Ruffner on
Friday, June 1. Donations will be accepted to fund
the Dora Ruffner Dance Scholarship for Alamo Community
Colleges and to support Dora’s daughters.
Dora
Ruffner was a founding member of the San Antonio Dance
Umbrella and the San Antonio Modern Dancers’
Co-Laboratory (MoDaCoLab), regional director of Turning
the Wheel Productions, and lead dance instructor at
Palo Alto College. Prior to arriving at Palo Alto,
she spent ten years as the wellness coordinator at
the University of Incarnate Word. At the Dance Umbrella,
she co-developed the Dance Partners Program, a curriculum-based
dance in schools program. In October 2006, she was
awarded the Center Stage award for her vast contributions
to the organization.
Students
of the Maymester dance intensives at Northwest Vista
and Palo Alto College will perform “D’s
Spirit,” an original piece choreographed by
Brazilian artist, dancer and instructor Rosangela
Silvestre. Silvestre was in residence at both colleges
for Maymester.
“Honoring
Dora” will be held on June 1 at 7:00 p.m. at
the Carver Community Cultural Center, 226 N. Hackberry.
