Matari Jones

Many have seen her face every day on the morning news, while others have heard her voice on radio. After a lengthy and thorough search, St. Philip's College selects former News 4 WOAI-TV reporter Matari Jones as the new College Director of Community and Public Relations.

"Matari brings a wealth of knowledge about San Antonio and the media community to our college," said St. Philip's College President, Dr. Adena Williams Loston. "Her strong communication skills, her fair and balanced reporting and her enormous strengths in mass communications will be an asset to our campus."

Matari Jones-Gunter graduated from NEISD’s Roosevelt High School in San Antonio in 1989. In 1993, she earned a B.A. in Journalism and a double minor in Spanish and Marketing from Texas A&M University.

"This is an incredible opportunity for me to have a positive and direct impact on the lives of others, especially those living within the East side community," Jones-Gunter said. "I am so excited to be involved in a college campus setting where I can encourage and motivate more African-Americans and Hispanics to earn a college degree."

Jones-Gunter will begin her duties, which include St. Philip’s College main campus and its Southwest campus, Tuesday, May 29, 2007.

St. Philip's College was founded in 1898 by Bishop James Steptoe Johnston of St. Philip's Episcopal Church of the West Texas Diocese. St. Philip's is a Historically Black College and Hispanic Serving Institution with a semester enrollment of more than 10,000 credit and over 5,000 continuing education students.
St. Philip's is among the oldest and most diverse community colleges in the nation.
