Free wireless Internet access is now available at all of the Alamo Community Colleges — San Antonio College, St. Philip’s College, Northwest Vista College, Palo Alto College and Northeast Lakeview College. It is also available at St. Philip’s College’s Southwest Campus, the Advanced Technology Center at KellyUSA, the Central Texas Technology Center, located in New Braunfels and the Westside Workforce Education and Training Center.

“Our students, faculty, staff and community members can now access the Internet on their wireless-equipped laptop, cell phone or PDA in a wide variety of locations inside and outside on our campuses,” said Dr. Charles Burmeister, chief information officer and director of information technologies for the Alamo Community Colleges. “Not only will our users have increased access, but we also have the highest, most reliable security available built into our wireless network,” he added.

“Providing our students with the opportunity to take advantage of the latest advances in technology is critical to the Alamo Community Colleges’ focus on student success and an increased capacity to serve our students, two of the goals of our strategic plan,” said Alamo Community Colleges’ Chancellor Bruce H. Leslie.

The wireless Internet network was one of the district-wide technology improvements funded by the $450 million bond issue approved by Bexar County voters in November 2005. According to Arne Saustrup, district network/operations manager, the Alamo Community Colleges’ wireless Internet network “is a robust system designed with a very high capacity that should deliver a high level of functionality in most situations. He added that it is also a “smart system” that is designed to respond to how it’s being used in order to optimize service for all users. A list of frequently asked questions regarding the Alamo Community Colleges’ wireless network is online at http://www01.accd.edu/it/faq/faq_wireless.html.

The Alamo Community Colleges consist of five colleges serving the Bexar County area: Palo Alto College, St. Philip’s College, San Antonio College, Northeast Lakeview College and Northwest Vista College. The Alamo Community Colleges serve more than 75,000 students each semester. For more information about the Alamo Community Colleges, visit our website at www.accd.edu.
