Acclaimed Documentary Filmmaker to Lecture at SPC

Young souls forced to fight. Roya Hakakian, acclaimed documentary filmmaker and writer, will lecture at St. Philip’s College on Thursday, June 21, 2007, from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. in the Watson Fine Arts Theatre at the MLK campus. Ms. Hakakian will discuss the topic Armed and Innocent: Children Soldiers of War followed by a question and answer session with members of the audience.

Armed and Innocent, an internationally recognized film commissioned by UNICEF and written, directed, and produced by Hakakian, will be shown prior to the start of the lecture, followed by the film maker’s commentary and a spirited question and answer session. Armed and Innocent examines the involvement of underage children in wars around the world and was a nominee for best short documentary at various international film festivals.

Roya Hakakian has collaborated in a wide variety of network television programs, including 60 Minutes and A & E's Travels With Harry, and ABC Documentary Specials with the late Peter Jennings, Discovery, and The Learning Channel. She speaks on the subject of the Middle East and human rights and has appeared on CSPAN-Book TV, CNN International, CBS Early Show, and Now with Bill Moyers. She is also a contributor to the Weekend Edition of National Public Radio's All Things Considered.
