The
San Antonio Chapter of the Association for Women in
Communications recently awarded two Northwest Vista
College faculty members, Linda Cuellar and Craig Coroneos,
the Proliner Award for their collaboration on the
thirty-minute documentary “Gaining Ground,”
which aired on KLRN-TV in 2006. The award was presented
on June 7 at the San Antonio chapter’s 27th
Annual Headliner/Proliner Awards Banquet, which honored
seven community leaders for their outstanding professional,
volunteer and civic achievements and 80 pieces of
work by professional communicators in the San Antonio
area.
“Gaining
Ground,” produced by KLRN-TV in conjunction
with Making Connections/San Antonio, captures the
stories of several San Antonio West Side residents
who have achieved their financial dreams. The program
was created as a companion to the national PBS documentary,
“Waging a Living,” which focused on raising
awareness about the problems faced by low-income earners
on a national level.
“I
strongly believe there should be more social programs
to right the wrongs of institutional racism and neglect,”
says Linda Cuellar, Northwest Vista College assistant
professor of communications who produced and narrated
the documentary. “I’ve witnessed the positive
impact our government can make in the lives of families.
Programs like these help raise awareness that more
can be done.”
The Proliner
Awards recognize excellence in professional achievement
in the field of communications. Annually, professional
and student entries are judged by a different AWC
chapter. This year’s entries were judged by
the Springfield, Missouri chapter. San Antonio Express-News
columnist Ed Tijerina served as this year’s
master of ceremonies.
The
San Antonio chapter of the Association for Women in
Communications represents more than 100 women and
men working in communication fields in the greater
San Antonio area. Members are employed by advertising
and public relations firms, colleges and universities,
financial institutions, Fortune 500 corporations,
manufacturers, nonprofit organizations, broadcast
and print media, and retail and service-oriented businesses.
