Academy Student Wins Silver Medal at SkillsUSA National

Area Aerospace Academy student Zachary Trede is congratulated
by Jose Rivera, SPC Aviation Instructor, on winning
the silver medal in the Aviation Maintenance Technology
competition at the National SkillsUSA contest.
Alamo Area
Aerospace Academy student Zachary Trede was awarded
a silver medal in the Aviation Maintenance Technology
competition at the National SkillsUSA competition
held June 25-30 in Kansas City, Missouri. Previously,
Trede placed first in the SkillsUSA State Leadership
Competition for Aviation Maintenance Technology Skills
contest, which allowed him to advance to the national
competition representing Texas. In addition to the
silver medal, Trede was awarded Irwin tools and a
fully loaded Snap On rollaway tool box.
Trede was
a student in the Alamo Area Aerospace Academy at St.
Philip's College Northeast site from August 2005 to
May 2007. He received a Certificate of Completion
in Aircraft Turbines Aircraft Mechanic from st. Philip's
College in May 2007. After taking Summer II classes
at San Antonio College, Trede plans to attend Texas
A&M University—Galveston in the fall to
study Marine Engineering Technology.
His SkillsUSA
awards are not the first honors Trede has merited.
One of the top 25 graduates in his class at Churchill
High School, he earned a place on St. Philip’s
colleges’ part-time student Honor Roll in Fall
2005, Spring 2006, Fall 2007 and Spring 2007. As part
of his academy participation, he interned with the
12th Flying Training Wing at Randolph AFB last summer.
This is
the second year in a row that a student from the Aerospace
Academy has won the SkillsUSA state competition and
gone on to compete at the national level. The Alamo
Community Colleges’ academies—Aerospace,
Manufacturing Technology and Information Technology
and Security—provide education, experience and
job opportunities for high school students looking
to “jump-start” their future. The programs
are design to provide two-year training and internship
programs that introduce qualified students to career
opportunities in key industries, while providing a
seamless transition from high school to college to
the workplace.
With three
specialized academies to choose from, students can
receive college-level training in high-wage occupations
while completing high school, all at no cost to the
student. The academies are an innovative training
partnership between the Alamo Community Colleges,
18 area school districts and local companies.For more
