Dr. Roberto
Gonzales, an assistant professor of biology at Northwest
Vista College, is currently recruiting the first cohort
of students for the Sustaining Talent in Education to
Launch Learning and Research (STELLAR) in Science and
Engineering Project.
The STELLAR
project, funded by a $522,000 grant from the U.S.
Department of Education, is designed to increase the
number of underrepresented and economically needy
students majoring in the science and engineering disciplines,
as well as supporting the persistence, retention,
success and graduation of participating students.
The students will be able to take advantage of academic
seminars, faculty mentoring and advising, opportunities
to do extensive laboratory research, bi-monthly student
forums, and a laptop lending program. Students who
are chosen will be designated Millennium Scholars
and will receive a $1,000 stipend per year for two
years. Ultimately, graduates of this program will
be prepared for the university-level research environment.
Northwest
Vista College, one of the Alamo Community Colleges,
opened in 1995. Located at 3535 N. Ellison Drive,
next to SeaWorld of Texas, Northwest’s expanding
agreements with business and higher education partnerships
provide a wealth of opportunities for students and
the community.
