On Monday, October 15, Northwest Vista College’s Alternative Programs sponsored a rap contest at the Education on Demand Rally. Trophies were given to the contestants, including a $500 scholarship to the overall winner, Justin Newton of Roosevelt High School.

The Education on Demand Rally was a call to action for schools, elementary through high school, to participate in an event that encourages students to pursue higher education. The rally hosted several local speakers: Tejano Grammy artist winner Emilio Navaira, KENS TV personality Bridget Smith, astronaut Dr. Bernard Harris, and radio personalities from The Beat 98.5 FM. Also at the event were Spurs’ and Dallas Cowboy’s mascots.

Hosting the event was District 2 Councilwoman, Sheila McNeil, as well as a planning committee made up of educational institutions, including Northwest Vista College’s very own Manuel Navarro Jr. Approximately 3,700 students were in attendance, spanning from several independent school districts within District 2.

The Education on Demand Rally is a component of an education campaign led by Councilwoman Sheila McNeil, which seeks to heighten the importance of education for the future of San Antonio’s workforce.
