The
Medical Assisting Mentorship Program, a collaboration
between San Antonio College and Bexar County Medical
Society Staffing Services was formally announced
at a news conference on Friday, Oct. 26. Developed
in response to the major shortage of personnel
required to staff clinics and doctors’ offices,
the mentorship program will provide an opportunity
to help all of the students who have completed
the rigorous course of study and are eligible for
the externship capstone course.
in order to participate in the Medical Assisting
Mentorship Program, student “externs” must
meet the same BCMS qualifications and go through the same screening process as
any other experienced applicant who is competent and proficient.
Successful candidates will then earn half-day unpaid credits toward their 240-hour
externship, in addition to part-time paid employment. Also, BCMS Staffing
Services will provide students with benefits, including options for medical insurance
coverage, dental, disability and life.
Upon completion, they are eligible to take the national CMA Certification Examination
of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).
The Medical Assisting program at San Antonio Colleges is rated “Exemplary” by
the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, which means that it exceeds the
Coordinating Board’s expected standards of excellence for retention, credentialing
passage rates and job placement.
Bexar County Medical Society's awareness of the reputation of the Medical Assisting
students from San Antonio College provided the vision for the Mentorship Program.
Moreover, this confirms the commitment to excellence shared by Bexar County Medical
Society and San Antonio College, one of the Alamo Community Colleges.
