St. Philip's College Awards Scholarship for Poetry Contest

Before a crowd of nearly three thousand students in the AT&T Center, Paris Singleton read a poem about the importance of education and walked off the stage with a college scholarship.The Education on Demand Rally is sponsored by District Two City Councilwoman Sheila McNeil. St. Philip's College is located within her district. McNeil created the rally in response to reports that the high school drop out rate in San Antonio was nearly 50%.The event's main goal is to encourage students to stay in school and do their best. To encourage students to enroll in college after graduation from high school, St. Philip's college offered a $500 scholarship in the poetry slam contest. Singleton won first place. She's an eighth grader at Ed White Middle School in the Northeast Independent School District.
