Acting on the recommendation of San Antonio College President Robert E. Zeigler, The Alamo Colleges’ Board of Trustees has approved the appointments of David Mrizek as Vice President of College Services and Conrad D. Krueger Sr. as Dean of Arts & Sciences. In addition, Dr. Lu Pelayo was appointed District Director of Nursing, and Vernell Walker will serve as Interim Dean of Professional-Technical Education at SAC.

“I am very pleased with these appointments,” said Dr. Zeigler, adding, “They are all professionals with outstanding credentials, and both San Antonio College and The Alamo Colleges will benefit from their proven leadership skills.”

Mrizek has previously served at SAC as Chief Financial Officer, Director of Institutional Planning Evaluation and Budget, and Chair of the Theatre and Communication Department. He was a member of the District Strategic Planning Team, the College Planning Council, Institutional Effectiveness Steering Committee, and Chair of the Faculty Senate. He played a crucial role in the college’s re-accreditation and in the approval of Northeast Campus in 2001.

After earning his B.S. and M.A. degrees from Eastern Illinois University, Mrizek came to SAC as a faculty member in 1970 while serving in the U.S. Air Force. He joined the full-time faculty in 1974.

Conrad Krueger Sr. has taught at SAC since 1994 in the Mathematics Department, where he has served as Evening and Adjunct Coordinator and Chair, in addition to chairing the Quality Enhancement Plan Committee and serving on a variety of college, district, state and national committees and panels.

After the plant where he worked as a production mechanic was shut down, Krueger came to SAC as a nontraditional student at age 32, earning an Associate of Applied Science degree. He then earned an M.A. in Mathematics with a concentration in statistics from the University of Texas at San Antonio before returning to join the Math faculty at SAC. He is currently working on a doctorate in Higher Education Leadership from Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi.

Lula W. Pelayo, Ph.D., R.N., has served as Dean of Professional-Technical Education and Chair of the Department of Nursing Education at SAC. Under her leadership, the Nursing Education program continued its accreditation and received special commendations by the Board of Nursing Examiners for the State of Texas and “Exemplary Status” from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Pelayo earned her Masters in Nursing from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Nursing and her Doctorate in Nursing from the University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing. She received the NISOD Excellence in Teaching Award and has served as President of both the Texas Association of Deans and Directors of Professional Nursing Programs and the San Antonio Chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses Association.
