SAC Journalism Students Win First Place, Other Honors

Competing with both two- and four-year colleges, San Antonio College’s
student newspaper "The Ranger" won First Place for Best All-Around Non-Daily
Student Newspaper in Texas and Oklahoma in the annual Mark of Excellence
Awards competition held by the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and
will advance to national competition. Texas State University and Rice
University came in second and third places, respectively.
"We are particularly proud of recognition from SPJ because the non-daily
newspaper categories include both two-year and four-year colleges," said
Marianne Odom, Professor and Chair of the Journalism-Photography Department.
Student editors of "The Ranger" during the contest period were Julian
Aguilar and Joyce Flores. In addition, TheRanger.org (at
http://www.theranger.org) won Third Place in the Best Affiliated Web Site
category, and the magazine “The Fourth Write” won Second Place in the Best
Student Magazine category.
Students who won individual awards included Regis L. Roberts (Second Place)
for feature writing, Julio Borjon, Jon Coker and Justin Gomez (Third Place)
for editorial cartooning, D.A. James (Third Place) for breaking news
photography, and Alberto Dekampo (Second Place) and Bridgette Sturts (Third
Place) for feature photography. Faculty advisors are Instructor Irene
Abrego, Chairperson and Instructor Marianne Odom, Instructors Susan Merkner
and Edmund Lo, and Laboratory Technician Tricia Buchhorn.
