Northeast Lakeview College & SCUCISD Partner to
Welcome Actress Mary Badham

(San Antonio, TX – April 8, 2008) Northeast Lakeview College partnered with Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD to bring Actress Mary Badham to Samuel Clemens HS on April 8th. Badham is best known for her portrayal of Jean Louise 'Scout' Finch in the Oscar-winning 1962 film To Kill A Mockingbird, for which she was nominated for a best-supporting-actress Academy Award.
Her presentation included a short introduction to her current endeavors and how she was chosen for the role of "Scout" in the movie "To Kill A Mockingbird.” She also interacted with the audience during a short Q&A period.
Badham’s presentation is part of The Big Read for an Enlightened Community. Northeast Lakeview College received a matching funds grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to participate in the national Big Read program and has partnered with Schertz-Cibolo- Universal City ISD to bring northeast Bexar county and the Metrocom communities together to read and celebrate the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
The event included a private reception meet-and-greet with the actress in the Clemens HS Library. The public presentation was held in the Clemens Auditorium and included a welcome and introduction of Ms. Badham from Senator Judith Zaffarini, Texas State Senator – District 21 and a question-and-answer session between Ms. Badham and the audience. Badham’s visit concludes Northeast Lakeview College’s The Big Read for an Enlightened Community series of eventsthat have run since early March. Badham also made a community presentation at the Live Oak Civic Center.
“Partnering with SCUCISD seemed like a natural fit,” says Dr. Eric Reno, Northeast Lakeview College president. “High school students read To Kill A Mockingbird as part of their high school curriculum. Participating in The Big Read allows them to read the book, engage in these community activities, and exchange ideas,” Reno added.
The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) designed to
restore reading into the center of American culture. The NEA presents the Big Read in
partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with
Arts Midwest. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment.
