St. Philip's College Has Graduation Ceremony for At-Risk StudentsSt. Philip’s College/George Gervin Academy program was for 25 at-risk students who want to succeed
SAN ANTONIO (Aug. 1, 2008) --- The graduation ceremony for the George Gervin Academy District and St. Philip’s College 2008 Intensive Summer Program was held Aug. 1 at the George Gervin Academy in San Antonio. A partnership of St. Philip’s College and George Gervin Academy, the Intensive Summer Program improves parental involvement, high school graduation rates, college entrance exam scores and general interest in education among students who are considered at risk. The ceremony Aug. 1 was a tribute to the first graduating class of 25 students who successfully completed the six-week math, science, and reading program, said SPC Program Coordinator Deneice Stewart. The program is funded by a two-year grant, and a 2009 program is in store, Stewart said. The graduation ceremony is only part of the program, said Stewart. The students will continue with the customer service portion of their studies to learn key job etiquette skills and more about their work options, Stewart said. This portion of the program is completed in partnership with Workforce Solutions Alamo. The classes run Aug. 4 through 15 at the SPC College Martin Luther King campus.
