SAN ANTONIO (Sept. 15, 2008) --- St. Philip’s College announces exciting Hispanic Heritage Month programs that run from Sept. 16 to Oct. 15 on its Martin Luther King and Southwest Campuses. A reception Sept. 16 at 2 p.m. in the Morgan Gallery on the college’s Martin Luther King campus unveils the calendar of events. Actor/Singer/Recording Artist Lee Cadena will perform and WOAI’s Maclovio Perez is guest emcee. The launch and all events are free and open to the public. Achievements the College celebrates this year include being on The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine’s 2008 Top 50 list of community and junior colleges awarding the most degrees to Hispanic students, and the magazine’s Top 20 list of community and junior colleges with Hispanic faculty members. Helping to celebrate the College’s successes at various points in the observances will be students, faculty, staff and several guests of note to include Actor-Singer-Recording Artist Lee Cadena, Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Richard Perez, and San Antonio housing authority President and CEO (interim) Army Maj. Gen. (ret.) Alfred A. Valenzuela. All events are free and open to the public, said organizer Felipa Lopez. “The College is celebrating our diversity as a Hispanic Serving Institution by promoting the general public's awareness, understanding and appreciation for Hispanic culture during this observance,” said Lopez. “I haven’t seen a calendar of this magnitude here in my 11 years with the College,” Lopez said.
